Lance hails from Wahiawa, HI, was a culinary chef at a christian retreat in upstate New York, and has been featured on the Food Network (Chopped and Iron Chef). His love for teaching has brought him to Flint Hills Technical College in Emporia, Kansas (where we did the photo shoot). He is being featured in the article for his recent good deed: While on an episode of Chopped, he won the $10,000 prize but ended up giving the money to the second place winner so that she could spend time with her ailing mother. For more news on Lance, see a corresponding article in the Emporia Gazette.

With the dearth of typefaces—free and otherwise— available to the graphic designer these days, there now exists a wonderful website that allows you to upload drawings of your favorite handwritten characters, and convert them into a bona fide OpenType typeface. I’ve actually tried this and it works wonderfully, especially for some of the funkier-looking fonts. The end product is a bit limited as to ligatures and extra characters, but the price (free) is hard to beat.

The sandwich that most people take for granted has a place of honor in our studios, owing to its incredible flexibility, ease of assembly, and wide range of flavors. It is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (a small town in Kent, United Kingdom) who was an 18th-century aristocrat. Lord Sandwich was said to be quite fond of card playing, and reportedly had a valet bring him some meat tucked between two pieces of bread which kept his bare hands from getting greasy and soiling his cards. Supposedly, his cribbage skills improved thereafter.

This particular set of images was produced for Cargill, and is used for point-of-purchase banners and labels in Sam’s Club stores. Though we had little time for card-playing during the shoot, it was difficult to keep our hands off the product. Enjoy!
